Planning for 4 Year College

Checklists by Grade

4 Year College Information

The University System of Georgia (USG) is comprised of all of the 4 year colleges and universities in the state that are public.

The Peach State Tour is a combined presentation of what GA Tech, GA State, UGA, and Augusta University have to offer.  Admissions reps present college specific information: offerings, application process, deadlines, scholarships, etc.

In the counselor version of the Peach State Tour, this is the information that each college provided about how being test score optional affects admissions decisions.

  • GA Tech: They moved to students self-reporting test scores a few years back.  After students are offered admission, they provide their actual scores.  They stated test-optional is no different at all for reviewing applications.  Test scores are pretty irrelevant.  If students do submit test scores, it is unlikely that it will make a difference in the admission decision.

  • GA State: They are historically merit-based.  They are having to consider other indicators.  Providing scores does not offer an advantage but may be submitted as a supplemental data point.

  • UGA: Think of it like the optional teacher recommendation.  There is no penalty if it’s not submitted.  “Because we use whole-student evaluation, we’re going to be looking at the student’s application as a whole in both cases.  The essays, the letters of recommendation, the way that they discuss their involvement—it all matters.”  This is what the website states: “’Demonstrated academic achievement’ is the primary factor in first-year admission decisions at the University of Georgia. The academic review of first-year applications centers on several criteria: the student’s grade point average (GPA) in core academic courses, the rigor of a student’s course selection, and his or her best combination of scores on the SAT or ACT (if the student decides to include optional test scores). Additionally, all applications are reviewed for conduct issues; recommendations; satisfactory completion of all courses and completion of the required College Preparatory courses. Grades from high school and rigor of school curriculum make up about 75% of our prediction of academic success at UGA with standardized exams comprising the remaining quarter.
